HOP PICKING
TO THE BREWERY
The first load of rectangular hop pockets
This
photo was taken at Northlands Oast (I don't know the year) and I am
told by Tom Macey that it is the first load of rectangular hop pockets
loaded ready for delivery to Park Royal Brewery. Road
transportation was now being used as opposed to rail. The
contractor for this load is John Jempson & Son from Rye.
Tom tells me that they were under strict instructions when loading the
lorry to make sure that every hop pocket had the end showing the
Guinness name. When the lorry had been loaded they spotted a
pocket near the bottom that had been loaded the wrong way round with a
blank end showing. Some quick improvisation came up with some
empty pocket material being stenciled and carefully wrapped around the
end of the offending pocket.
